Mother Goose Time's theme for November is community helpers. Day 1 started with firefighters.
The girls wrote their names on the new name tags for the month.
Addie read the rhyme time poster, Jack be Nimble. Then the girls took turns pretending to be Jack and jumping over the block candlestick. Once they jumped over it they had to pretend they were firefighters and put the fire out by knocking the blocks down. They thought this was a lot of fun, and played it many many times.
The girls were able to work on their math by picking numbers and then driving the same number of firetrucks (one of the manipulatives in this months box) to the correct fire station. Elli can count but doesn't recognize her numbers yet, so this was good practise for her.
For today's invitation to create the girls were given a piece of black paper, paint, and a wooden fork. They looked at a picture of a fire for inspiration. Addie asked if she could add a cotton-ball to her picture, which she stuck on the end of the fork and said it was a marshmallow. They both love these open ended art projects.
I wrote the letters of the month with chalk on boulders outside. The girls took turns rolling the cube that came in the starter pack, and then looking for the letter they rolled. Once they found it they had to spray it until the letter was gone. After all 6 letters were done they asked to play it again. This is a great game to help with letter recognition. It can also be done with shapes, colors, numbers, etc.
A couple of weeks ago our local fire house had an open house, where the girls got to try on gear, sit in the trucks, and watch a vehicle extraction. This tied in perfectly with the start of our community helper theme.
