Bee Hives

On Monday we started a new monthly theme with Mother Goose Time, bees & butterflies.  Day 1 started with bee homes.  We talked about where bees live and looked at pictures of different hives.
During circle time the shape of the month, hexagon, was introduced.
I gave Elli an egg carton and play-dough.  She made little bees with wings and stingers and used a pencil to add eyes and a mouth.  This was her favorite thing of the day.  She loved making the little bees and has made a new batch of bees everyday since the first time.  She puts them all to sleep in the egg carton hive and carries it around.  The hive has since been decorated.
Elli used bubble warp to stamp paint onto hive shapes.  She decorated some bees to go with it.
We continued learning about hexagons by working with one of this months manipulatives, black and yellow attribute blocks.  Elli sorted out all the hexagons and then used them to make her own hive design.  She used wooden bees that we have from a set she got for Christmas to add to her hive.
I cut a hole in a box and Elli pretended ping pong balls were bees.  She had fun finding them and putting them in her hive.
She completed her name tag.  I write her name in highlighter and she traces it.  After writing her first name she asked me to add her middle name so she could practice writing that too.
I hid bees with velcro on the backs around the house.  Elli had lots of fun finding them and making them fly back to the hive.  After she collected them all, we read the rhyme time poster.  I re-hid the bees a bunch of times because she wanted to keep playing.
We finished up with a book about bees.
