St. Paddy's and Pluto

The night before St. Patrick's Day my husband helped Addie build a leprechaun trap.  She drew blueprints for it and decided a robot should guard the trap.  I told her a robot was not something we knew how to make, so she decided stringing a bell to the box would be a good way to alert her if she caught something.  In the morning she checked her trap and was surprised to see that a leprechaun ran through the side of it.  She said next year she'll use a stronger box.

Mother Goose Time provided a whole days worth of lessons related to the holiday.
We started off by finding things that were all the colors of the rainbow and then we made a rainbow picture.  The girls drew a rainbow and then put glue on it.  I helped them sprinkle salt over the glue and then they used watercolors on the salt.
Addie wanted to wear green but Elli wanted to wear her too small Halloween shirt

Elli wound up eating the salt off her picture so I had to throw it away.

After the craft we made a mint pie.  It's one of my favorite desserts and both the girls and my husband love it.  The girls love to help cook and it's a great way to practice measuring and following directions.
The best part of cooking.
After we finished cooking the girls went on a hunt for gold.  I put gold coins in a little pot and hid it in different places for them to find.  They loved looking for the gold and took turns hiding it for each other when I was making dinner later in the evening.  Elli wasn't good at hiding it, but she loved looking for it.
Day 10's topic was Pluto.  We started off by talking about little things and then sang "Spinning Planets" while spinning around the room.  Next we played lotto.  I was surprised at how quickly Elli caught on to the concept of matching the pictures to the ones on her card.

Next we talked about what it would be like to travel in space.  The girls put on helmets and pretended to be in space while dancing to the the Blast Off to Space CD.
Then the girls made astronaut pictures.  They both wanted to keep their space helmets on.

We talked about spheres and the girls went around the house collecting balls.  We put the biggest one in the middle for the sun and put the little planets around it.  We also worked on putting them in size order.

We also worked on the My Little Journal.  Today the girls worked on the yellow page.  They drew a planet and used finger paint to add moons.

Addie and I talked about how it feels when people say you're too small to do something and how to make people who are sad feel better.  Then she wrote a letter to Pluto and worked on her math and reading workbooks.  Elli worked on making a space ship out of different shapes.
Tomorrow we start Jupiter.
