Observing and Assessing

The preschool I work at currently has children from 2-4 attending.  They are all in different stages of development, and Mother Goose Time makes it pretty easy to assess whether or not they are on target.  They provide a developmental skill continuum, which shows the different benchmarks for each domain (literacy, motor, etc).  Every day has a different activity that is starred, so if you assess those activities, by the end of the month you will have hit every domain.  They also offer free downloads for members where you can track each child's progress through the year.
For fine motor skills I observed the children cutting tornadoes.
Spelling words using the provided hands on letters was a great way to assess where they are on the literacy and reading readiness scale.
And for older kids the more math and literacy workbooks are a great way to see just how much they really know when it comes to basic math and reading skills.
There are way too many crafts to save them all, but I have been picking a few favorites to add to each child's portfolio to document their growth throughout the year.  I love the alphabet sheets that are in each monthly box.  Every month 3 letters are introduced, by the end of the year each child will have an entire alphabet book.  I also save other flat projects that can easily store inside their folders, and I have tons of pictures of the kids in action.
